Chatting with Shanise B. was born out The Akua Magazine.Net's Spotlight of the Month. As I chatting with everyone, recording our conversation and playing them back as I prepared their articles, I realized something. I was missing a great deal of THEM. I am not a write and did not feel my translations of the conversations were doing my guest justice. In the month of July 2007, the one year anniversary of The Akua Magazine.Net, I had the pleasure of speaking with NY PR Diva. I recorded the conversation to play back later. As I was recording our conversation, I realized I needed to let everyone hear this. I have always loved candid interviews and decided to share it with my listeners and visitors. I very recently decided to give this show it own name separate from my music podcast, The Akua Lounge, and thus was born Chatting with Shanise B.

For Every Love There Is A Reason By the time barely-married, busy body Norelle figured out that she was beginning to look and act like the woman she blamed for her father’s death, she hoped that her own indiscretions with her son’s father, Tariq, does not cost her the perfect husband when she receives unexpected news. While walking a tight rope of half truths and lies for the sake of love, Norelle turned some of her energy toward helping her best friend Keilah look at the possibility of a second chance at love after receiving news that turned her world topsy-turvy. What did Andre expect from Keilah after he told her? Was Andre expecting Keilah to explain away his emotional duality, or more specifically, was he expecting answers to questions that were left unasked between them when they made a costly choice two years ago? While Andre attempts to deal with the pain of his past, and anxiety about his present circumstances on his own, Keilah attaches herself to a man who she knows is not right for her rather than contend with the emotional avalanche that began with the choices her mother made so many years ago. Can she hold on for that special someone waiting just around the corner? When flashbacks of the past and present collide, both Norelle and Keilah ask themselves what won’t they do for love. Norelle must deal with her own demons while Keilah must get emotionally naked once and for all with Andre to put together the pieces of their past so they can go on … with or without each other. For Every Love There Is A Reason takes the reader into a multi-layered tale of choices and consequences of thirty-something best friends, Keilah and Norelle, who slip and slide with laughter and tears through their own mistakes, as they try to make sense of love on their own terms. Syreeta Rios of Big Gyrl Clothing, Inc.

Syreeta Rios/BGC

Syreeta Rios is the CEO, owner, and operator of Big Gyrl Clothing, Inc. She began sewing clothes at the early age of 8 with the guidance of her mother, but decided to take her career in another direction. After a few semesters of college business courses, becoming frustrated with the style of clothing available to plus size females, and working in corporate America full time for seven years without the opportunity to excel, Syreeta decided to pursue the fashion industry full time. Working and planning her business objectives for almost two years and designing clothing, she opened her e-commerce store 12/24/2005 and has never looked back.

She volunteered in a minority youth non-profit organization as an instructor, teaching female minority teens about business ownership and the financial services industry. She also is a spoken word poet and writer. Her ultimate goal is for BGC to become one of the most successful corporations in the world in clothing design, but also publishing, activism, investments, and educating all minorities the value of financial literacy.

“I believe that every female, no matter what their size, should maintain confidence and class. You are a diva at all times. Being a big sister myself, I learned to accept my physical self and run with it in fashion and everyday life. Big is being beyond intelligent and gorgeous. A big woman does everything big in life, love, and fashion. Join the plus size revolution today!”

Buy It Here!

Momowilly, the best thing smoking, heard that hip-hop was dead and that they were looking for her. She’s been known to slay beats and beasts with a vengeance.

With a voice like cognac sprinkled with gravel, momowilly grabs and holds your attention. More than a spoken word artist, rapper, lyricist, or femcee, she is a philosopher with aphorisms frequently in rhyme. Crafting pieces that infuse traditional hip-hop, performance poetry, and comedy, she offers a style fresh as baked bread. With sex appeal rivaling any in the game, momowilly eschews the tired “lick me to like me” brand of rhyme that her contemporaries used to shoot up the charts and, ultimately, drop out of America’s consciousness just as quickly. “I can be the baddest with the phattest, but what else after that? Chicks need to step their game up,” momowilly offers with an eye roll.

An award-winning poet in several contests including the Writer’s Inn and Let’s Talk Honestly, she received critical and national acclaim when, amongst tens of thousands of entries, she was proclaimed Grand Prize Winner of Bryant McGill’s Poetry contest in January 2007 with her socio-political piece “It’s the Real (AIDS and Babies).” This, coupled with extensive internet buzz, thrust momowilly into the address books of many heavy hitters in the literary and entertainment industry, expanding her audience. Her oration of this piece and many others including “Dumb Ass Hoes,” “Damn Immigrants,” and “Evolution,” has garnered her a huge fanbase worldwide. She has performed her pieces from the top to the bottom--Brooklyn to Miami--to standing ovations. In April 2007, after performing the year before, she was asked to host two events at the Pan-African Bookfest in Ft. Lauderdale.

An unmatched mind, artists such as Jason Weaver, Mya, Cassidy, and the legendary Michael Jackson have applauded her work and artistry, commending her one-of-a-kind approach to life. When asked of her inspiration and influence, she says she has none except “Future momowilly, who’s a bigger star than I am today. I’m always trying to get closer to her level of success.” momowilly’s list of favorites includes a motley crew of artists such as Rob Thomas, Jay-Z, Vybz Kartel, sade, and Left Eye. Currently in the studio putting the final touches on her acapella-only independent debut “The momowilly Experience” with a scheduled release of Fall 2007, momowilly is planning on releasing a remix album in 2008, infusing her various musical styles and capabilities. Playing piano, clarinet, and an MPC3000 as a youth, she is currently taking up guitar to strengthen her musical acumen, ensuring that producers are the next ones to feel the heat.

Covering a wide array of topics such as AIDS, bad credit, promiscuity, fashion, and politics, momowilly incorporates several personalities and voices in her work to shed light on various points of view. Lighthearted yet heavy, honest and hilarious, momowilly is painstakingly murdering the game with the wickedest weapon, her mind.

Be safe, always, momowilly 2007

Chatting With Shanise B. with Special Guest Honey of HoneySoul.Com, Saturday, August 18, 2007

HoneySoul.Com

“Anything great always starts with love,” says soul-music aficionado Vonnie “Honey” Woods, whose means of expressing her sincere, simple passion for the music and its artists, has grown from a small mailing list about new music finds, to a weekly internet show called Soul 2 Soul (projectvibe.net), a morning radio show called Honey Soul’s Sunrise (90.1 FM, KPFT Houston), and HoneySoul.com, a site that receives visitors from at least 15 countries, including the U.K, Canada, Netherlands, France, Sweden, Japan, China, Czech Republic, Denmark, Poland, Jamaica, The Philippines, Brazil, Germany and Austria. The site has ranked as highly as #20 of out 198 million “soul music” searches on Google, and it has been referenced and/or acknowledged by Prince’s official site, Vibe.com, Eurweb.com, Capital Records, Okayplayer.com, AOL Black Voices, and Philadelphia Weekly - all in only two years.

After 40 interviews in one year - which Honey prefers to call “conversations” (with soul luminaries such as Maurice White, Chaka Khan, India.Arie, Teena Marie, Ron Isley, Meshell Ndegeocello, Brian McKnight, Marcus Miller, Van Hunt, Amel Larrieux, Donell Jones, Dwele and Syleena Johnson), Honey shows no signs of slowing down. The former banker and self-described “bridge … between good old soul music and those of us who love it,” is known for her command of “the art of conversation,” for making the music the star (”It’s never been about who I could talk to, but what I can reveal about music”) and her emotion-centered definition of soul music. “From R&B to hip hop to jazz to gospel to rock, if you can feel it, I call it soul.” Honey sums up her platform this way: “If you’re a soul artist making meaningful music, let’s talk.”
