Treat the world well….it was not given to you by your parents…it was lent to you by your children.

Kenyan Proverb

Thank you for visiting the Akua Magazine.Net. This magazine is a reflection of me. Who am I? On the surface, just a simple African American, fat, woman. Underneath, I am creative, a womanist, a music lover, a foody, a reader, an educator, a spiritualist, a mentor, a mother, a sister, a friend, a lover, a child of God. I aim to have each section of Akua Magazine.Net be supportive to all positive and creative communities, especially my bbbw community.

The Akua Magazine.Net is a division of The Akua Projects. The Akua Projects consist of The Akua Magazine.Net and The Akua Lounge Podcast Channel; coming in late spring of 2008 Akua Publishings and in the winter of 2008 Akua Couture E-Shop.

The Akua Magazine.Net's first issue was set for July 13, 2006. It actually fully debut the Thursday following. I chose the 13th of the month as the issue date for the magazine for a host of reasons:

  1. My Cousin, Lacey! C. Clark!, started a celebration movement through her organization called Self-Love Day celebrated on the 13th of every month.
  2. My son's birthday also falls on the 13th of the month.

Due to the growth of the magazine, I have set new issue dates for certain sections. For more information on Akua Events, click here.

Akua Magazine.Net's homepage is the hub of information and welcome for the magazine. Also is the first place to see what's new in new editions of the magazine.

'In The Kitchen' is maintained by Cook and Pastry Chef Mrs. Keisha Brown. My sister friend whom I lovingly call Mrs. Charmin. This section is updated once a month with recipes from Mrs. Brown's kitchen as well as other cooks and visitor submissions. To find out more about Mrs. Brown be sure to visit her bio.

The Akua Lounge Podcast Channel started as just my opinions on different artists who I would find via MySpace and Multiply. It has grown to have it's own site and podcast that shines a special light on Indie Artist of all genres. It consist of three shows:

  1. In The Groove - airs every Thursday and consist of an eclectic mix of great music;
  2. The Artist Showcase - This show is especially for Indie Artist. I search out Indie Artist and their music and bring them to my listeners;
  3. Can I Get A Giggle Wednesday - air the first Wednesday of every month. Listeners check out 2 minute skits of comics and then they vote on which skit made them laugh the most;
  4. The Akua Lounge Spotlight on The Flow Live.Com - A show done especially for The Flow Live.Com with a weekly spotlight on one artist and one song.

Our Events Calendar was originally 'In Philly'. This is still the events calendar portion of the magazine. The is difference I have opened registration to include events from everywhere as well as allowing others to list their events as well.

Every month I showcase a new Plus Sized/Full Figured Model of the Month. I am not saying skinny women are evil, but this magazine is a reflection of me and I am a B.I.G. GURL. So I try to do what I can to support my sisters in that endeavor.

The Book Nook has grown to include a store. Every profit made for The Book Nook supports the magazine as well as the artist.

The Links section consist of people I interact with or guest who have appeared in the magazine who have sites of their own. There is also a Market Directory and includes a Business Roll - A- Dex and Links catalog, here people may add themselves.

The Circle Room is the magazine's chat room. This is where discussions as well as interviews will be held for all to participate.

The Akua Magazine.Net Circle Room Message Board is a simply community board for guest to be activity as well as interact and network. The section will be under-recontruction starting February 2008.

The Writer's Corner is a showcase for creative writer's submissions. This includes their work plus a profile.

I have also revamped the Spotlight of the Month to a podcast, 'Chatting with Shanise B.', and will focus on guest in the bbbw community and/or provide services for the bbbw community. I felt this gave visitors a more direct introduction to my guest.

If you are interested in contributing, please let me know by visiting the submissions forms. If you would like to receive emails about Akua Magazine.Net activity, sign up for the mailing list registry.

Once again, I want to thank you for taking the time to come by.
